Forgiveness Given In-Justice

I heard in a session recently: All your anger disappears with the words ‘I forgive’ so if that resonates with you, you can silently forgive whomever in your life you need to forgive just by putting that thought out into the cosmos. The deeper that ‘I forgive’ is—the more that it’s from your heart not your headthe deeper the release of the feeling of injustice.

I was hearing this word injustice as if for the first time as Spirit continued: Justice has not been served until you forgive. Forgiveness is the justice.

As I understood the message, when forgiveness is offered, justice is served. Forgiveness is given in-justice. This does not mean that we do away with the criminal justice system. Most of the pain we carry in our hearts comes not from those who have broken any criminal laws, but from the weight of the injustice we feel at the hands of another person, institution, system of governance; the list is as varied as we are. Because we don’t want to or don’t know how to just be with the pain, we turn the pain into anger at the injustice of it all.

We can carry the pain and the anger for our entire lives, or we can let it go by walking through the doors of forgiveness. Our forgiveness can be a silent contract known only to our deepest selves, but even that has the power to change not only our lives but also the lives of those we hold in contempt. As the holiday season approaches, consider giving yourself the gift of justice by forgiving all those you hold in contempt, and remember that one of those people may be yourself.

Injustice is undone through forgiveness. Forgiveness is given in-justice.
